Aviator Jacket - The Legend of the Leather Pilot Jacket
Among leather jackets, there are several designs that have attained legendary status, reigning supreme in both women's and men's wardrobes for decades. Alongside the biker jacket and the bomber jacket, a prime example is the flight jacket — an iconic style whose popularity has never waned and about which our customers inquire almost daily. Where did it come from, what does it look like, and how should you style it? Read on to find out!

The History of the Flight Jacket
As the name suggests, the origins of the flight jacket are deeply rooted in aviation history. This is also reflected in another common term for the style: the aviator jacket. Although pilots originally did not wear leather apparel, the evolution of aerial navigation quickly necessitated it. Genuine leather provided vastly superior protection against harsh weather conditions — especially the biting cold and wind, which became increasingly unbearable at high altitudes in open-cockpit aircraft. Interestingly, Czesław Zbierański — an engineer and pioneer of Polish aviation — can be seen wearing a leather jacket in one of his most famous photographs while seated in his plane. That photo was taken in Warsaw back in 1911.

It is indisputable that the US military played a massive role in popularizing flight jackets worldwide. Even today, you can find many models adorned with US or US Army emblems in stores. The famous A-2 and G-1 models, which we hear so much about, undoubtedly made the biggest splash in the fashion world. The blockbuster Hollywood movie Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise in an aviator jacket, also played a pivotal role. It is likely thanks to him that the patch-adorned flight jacket enjoys such enduring fame.

The Classic Leather Flight Jacket — What Does It Look Like?
The original American flight jacket has undergone many transformations over the years. However, every variation shares several defining features, which often vary depending on the designer's vision. Much like the biker jacket, this silhouette comes in numerous renditions that share core elements. An aviator jacket is essentially a bomber-style jacket featuring a front zip closure with ribbed knit cuffs and hem. Embroidered patches are another iconic feature. Flight jackets with F19 or F16 patches, along with various other aviation-themed insignia, remain among the most sought-after designs. The collar is frequently finished with shearling, which can often be detached to reveal a traditional leather collar underneath. Depending on the brand, this shearling collar can be genuine or faux. Many models on the market are also equipped with an insulated lining (often referred to by customers as faux fur lining), providing extra thermal comfort and making the jacket an ideal choice for fall and early winter.

Insulated Flight Jackets
A genuine leather flight jacket is a versatile outerwear piece you can wear for most of the year. It works brilliantly as a spring or fall jacket. Many designs feature a zip-out liner (a removable thermal lining) for extra versatility. There are also permanently insulated leather flight jackets, which make an excellent winter choice. If the jacket includes a shearling collar, it can usually be flipped up (as shown in the photo below) to shield your neck from the cold and wind. A biker-style bomber jacket also provides excellent cold weather protection thanks to its ribbed trim on the sleeves and waistband, which stretch to adapt comfortably to your body.

How to Style a Leather Flight Jacket?
The answer is simple: in countless different ways! This silhouette is exceptionally versatile and serves as a standout piece for various outfits and occasions. Any bomber-style jacket pairs seamlessly with casual wear, such as denim jeans and a basic t-shirt. As outerwear, it also elevates slightly more formal looks, like when styled over a crisp white button-down shirt. Unlike snug-fitting leather jackets, a bomber jacket easily allows for extra layering underneath, such as hoodies, sweaters, or turtlenecks.
Why Is a Flight Jacket Worth Buying?
Setting fashion aside, a versatile black leather flight jacket with shearling is a staple that pairs well with almost any outfit, but its functional benefits are equally impressive. Because it comes in endless variations, the selection is vast! This variety also guarantees that while out and about, you're unlikely to run into someone wearing the exact same jacket. And if you're looking for something truly unique, we recommend exploring vintage-style jackets — whether pre-owned or distressed to look the part. Their distinctive, worn-in charm is sure to turn heads wherever you go.
